2018 Armistice Coin Set
Royal Australian Mint2018 Armistice Coin Set - One Hundred Years On
The Royal Australian Mint commemorates the centenary of the Armistice with this moving year set featuring a specially designed $1 coin.
At 11 am on 11 November 1918 the allied nations signed a Armistice with Germany that brought an end to the fighting on
the Western Front. Since Ottoman Turkey and Austria-Hungary had already signed similar agreements, the Armistice
marked the end of hostilities during the First World War by recognising the defeat of Imperial Germany by the allied
British, French, and American forces.
After two and a half years of bitter fighting on the battlefields of France and Belgium, Australian troops had already
fought their last action of the war at Montbrehain on 5 October 1918. Australia had made a substantial contribution to the
British Empire's success during the war, but the cost of victory was borne in staggering losses. Within four short years the
Australian Imperial Force had sustained more than 215 000 casualties, of which more than 60 000 died on active service.
To mark this significant moment in history this uncirculated set features an evocative $1 coin design featuring poppies
blooming above buried cartridges.
