BATTLE OF BEERSHEBA - CHARGE OF THE LIGHT HORSEMEN
Beersheba was one of the most gallant actions fought by Australians in the Middle East during the First World War.
On 31 October 1917 Australian troops from the 4th and 12th Light Horse Regiments charged the Ottoman positions under artillery and rifle fire. They succeeded in overrunning the Ottoman defences and captured the town, incurring relatively few losses.
Capturing Beersheba resulted in outflanking the Ottoman bastion at Gaza, allowing the British to continue the advance into Palestine.
